Tobold-Laryngoscope-of-1869 Laryngoscopy had it’s beginnings in the middle of the 19th century. Tobold introduced his first laryngoscope in 1862 and described and pictured it in his textbook about laryngoscopy in 1863.
The term laryngoscope, as an instrument to perform indirect laryngoscopy, examine the larnyx (voice box), vocal cords, and surrounding throat structures, appeared around the same time for the first time.

The history of laryngoscopie is closely intertwined with the availability of a sufficient light source — natural or artificial — and effective mirrors. Tobold made use of the Argand burner, an optical condenser to bundle and focus the light emitted by an Argand burner, and effective mirrors, to perfect his invention.
